The Stratum Gap cover benefits are comprehensive and well designed. You can choose which product would best suit your needs buy covering the shortfalls on your specific medical aid and option. Stratum Benefits cover the following GAPS/SHORTFALLS. We will give you a brief description of each shortfall and which product with Stratum would cover that shortfall:

1. 500% TARIFF GAP: This is the basic shortfall you get when going to hospital. It is the difference between what the doctors and anaesthetists charge for their operations IN hospital and what your medical aid would pay. This is known as the BASE 500 with Stratum. Adds on 500% of the tariff.

2.CO-PAYMENTS: This cover is for your co pays the medical aid requests you to pay before the procedure will be done, such as, a scope for example. You pay the first R 2200 or R 3000 and then they pay the rest. The same applies for scans, hospital admissions and a few others. Each medical aid, and options within those medical aids, have their own CO-PAYMENTS. Stratums CO-EVOLUTION has both the tariff and co-payments.

3. Oncology Benefit: As with most medical aids today, there is now a sub limit for the treatment of cancer. once you have reached this limit then you will have a co-payment of about 20% depending on the medical aid you are on. This can work out to be very expensive. The ELITE benefit has this and all three of the above mentioned benefits .

4. SUB-LIMIT: On most medical aids they impose sub limits on certain in hospital procedures as well as prosthesis'. For example Liberty impose a limit on dentistry in hospital as a sub limit. Should that be used up then the SUB-LIMIT benefit will be triggered. Most medical aids will impose sub limits. This benefit along with all the above benefits, is included in the ELITE OPTION with Stratum.

All the above options have the CASUALTY benefit included with differing limits. This is for the out patients or casualty where most medical aids would expect you to pay out of your savings, ultimately your own pocket. This is a great benefit to have since those sort of accidents can occur at any time and very often find us out of pocket. This casualty benefit is limited to accidental cover only. EG broken arms, sprains and the like. It is expensive because for the most part we rush to hospital on a Sunday afternoon when the rates are double!

5. PREMIUM WAIVER: This benefit pays for your premiums either for your medical aid and/or your gap benefit for a stipulated period for your beneficiaries on death, permanent disability or forced retrenchment. It is included in the ELITE option. There are differing limits and payment periods depending on the option.

Note that there is also accidental death and trauma counselling with the Stratum benefit options. Refer to the brochure for the amount of cover.

All in all Stratum benefits are a company who offer all the benefits needed for your medical aid option to give you full peace of mind for you and your family. Shortfalls are not a nice surprise especially when you thought you had enough cover. It is advisable to take the top cover to make certain the shortfall does not creep up on you. Don't forget that medical aids change their benefit offering year on year to keep premiums affordable. One of the most common ways of doing this is to impose sub limits or co payments which you could be unaware of unless you diligently read the small print each year! So don't get caught short. Get the cover and preferably the ELITE option.
